Ahrefs Brand Radar vs Dedicated AI Visibility Platforms

Whether Ahrefs Brand Radar is enough to track AI mentions, or a dedicated AI visibility platform is worth adding: what each says it does, which questions to check for overlap and gaps, and how to decide.

As AI answer engines take a larger share of how buyers research a purchase, a practical question follows for teams that already pay for Ahrefs: does Ahrefs Brand Radar cover AI visibility, or is a dedicated platform needed as well? This page gives you the questions that settle it, and what each vendor says about its own product.

This page is published by Vercatus, which is a dedicated AI visibility platform. It is not a hands-on benchmark of Ahrefs Brand Radar or of Profound. Everything said here about another product comes from that vendor’s own pages, linked in this page and read on 2 October 2026; none of it was tested. Prices are not compared, because they change and differ by plan and region: use each vendor’s pricing page.

What Ahrefs Brand Radar is

In Ahrefs’ words, Brand Radar is “Ahrefs’ AI visibility tool that tracks how any brand shows up in AI search in over 405+ million search-backed prompts” (Ahrefs help centre: what Brand Radar is). From that article:

  • Platforms. Seven AI platforms: AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Grok and Claude. Ahrefs notes that it is temporarily unable to gather new Grok data, and that Claude is available for custom prompts only.
  • Beyond the AI platforms. Search demand and web visibility, plus YouTube, Reddit and TikTok, which Ahrefs marks as beta.
  • Where the prompts come from. Ahrefs extracts People Also Ask questions from its keyword index and enters them into the web version of each AI chatbot using the default model.
  • How fresh it is. For the large prompt database, AI Overviews update every few days and AI chatbots once a month. Custom prompts, which track a question of your choice, are checked as often as you set, from monthly to daily.
  • What it measures. Mentions, citations, impressions and AI share of voice. A mention is counted once per response however often the brand appears; a citation for a domain is counted when at least one of its pages is cited; impressions sum the search volumes of the prompts where the brand appears; AI share of voice is a brand’s share of impressions among the brands tracked (Ahrefs help centre: AI visibility metrics).
  • What you can do with it. Benchmark your share of voice against competitors, see the most cited pages and domains, and find opportunities to be mentioned.
  • Next to it. Ahrefs’ Brand Radar page also lists AI traffic analytics and Bot Analytics, described as watching “AI crawlers in real time: when they read your pages and which ones they visit most” and marked free while in beta.

What a dedicated AI visibility platform (Vercatus) is

Vercatus is a B2B SaaS platform that measures and improves how AI answer engines and AI agents crawl, retrieve and cite a website. In its own terms, it consists of:

  • Site audits across nine machine identities, which show what each kind of machine, including each AI crawler, is served. See machine identities and reading a run report.
  • Answer Share on each of ten engines, which keeps each engine’s named and cited figures apart. See answer engines.
  • Topics, the poll and Answer Share: the share of AI answers on your topics that name or cite you, with its range. See the poll and how Answer Share is measured.
  • Plays with verdict-based causal verification: the exact change, and a verdict that compares the topics a change aimed at with topics left alone. See the verdict design.
  • Steps and a first draft for every play, and a full page for plays on your site, written on request, for you to edit and publish yourself. See plays.
  • An evidence-graded knowledge base of about 180 entries, each with its claim, sources and a grade from A to D. See the knowledge base.
  • Product documentation and an API, command-line and MCP surface. See the API, the CLI and MCP.
  • Original research on AI crawler access. See who lets AI assistants read them.

Do you need both?

If you pay for Ahrefs already, the useful question is not which product has more features. It is which of the jobs below your current tool does, and which it leaves to a person. Here is each job, and what the Brand Radar help articles say about it:

  • Machine access. Can the tool show what each AI crawler is served on your pages, and what a crawler that does not run JavaScript can read? Ahrefs’ Bot Analytics shows when AI crawlers visit and which pages they read. A machine-identity audit does the other half: it requests each page as each kind of machine and compares what comes back, including pages a crawler has never visited. Ahrefs’ pages as read do not describe that test.
  • Engines. Which engines does it read, and does it keep them apart rather than folding them into one number? Brand Radar lists the seven platforms above. Vercatus reads ten engines: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok, Le Chat, You.com, Google AI Mode and Copilot Search. Le Chat and You.com are not in Ahrefs’ list.
  • Prompt tracking. Which answers does a share count, and does it come with a range? Ahrefs’ share of voice is a share of search-volume-weighted impressions across its prompts. Vercatus’ Answer Share is a share of answers on your own topics, with a range. The two are different measures, so the numbers are not comparable.
  • Reason. When a competitor is picked, can the tool show why: the pages the engine read, the searches it ran, what it says from memory? Brand Radar shows the most cited pages and domains, and which pages were found but not cited. Vercatus adds the searches an engine runs and what it says without searching.
  • Change. Does it hand you a specific change with a draft, or a general recommendation? The Brand Radar pages describe finding opportunities, not drafting the change.
  • Proof. After you ship, how do you know it worked? Does anything compare the topics you changed with topics you left alone? The Brand Radar pages do not describe a before-and-after verdict.

Where a team’s answer to the last three is “a person does that by hand”, that is the gap a dedicated platform is built to close.

Brand Radar, Profound and Vercatus, by what each says it does

The table uses each vendor’s own wording where it is quoted, and leaves out anything that vendor does not state on the pages linked below. Profound’s list comes from its features page.

“Not listed” means only that the pages we read do not say so. It does not mean the vendor lacks the feature: check the vendor’s current documentation or ask them.

Frequently asked questions

We pay for Ahrefs. Do we need another AI visibility tool?

It depends on which of the jobs above your team needs done and who does them today. Ahrefs says custom prompt tracking comes with its plans from Lite upward, and that the wider Brand Radar index and all-platform access are bought separately; check what your plan includes. If every job on the list is covered, a second tool may add nothing. If measurement is covered but the reason, the change and the proof are done by hand, that is the gap a dedicated platform addresses.

Is Brand Radar enough to track AI mentions?

For counting mentions and citations of a brand across the platforms it covers, and comparing your share of voice with competitors’, it is what Ahrefs built it for. Whether it is enough depends on what you need beyond the count. Two details are worth checking against your needs. The large prompt database refreshes the AI chatbots once a month (custom prompts can be checked as often as daily). And a mention is counted once per response, so a number of mentions is a number of responses. Ask any vendor, including Vercatus, to show the answers behind a number, not only the number.

Brand Radar vs Profound vs other AI trackers: how do they differ?

Compare them by the job your team needs done, not by the length of a feature list. The table above sets out what Ahrefs and Profound each say they do, next to Vercatus. They are built around different jobs: Brand Radar around discovery across AI platforms and the wider web, Profound around visibility, prompt demand, AI crawler analytics and content workflows, and Vercatus around a loop from the answer to a proven change. Prices are on each vendor’s own pricing page.

Does Ahrefs show AI Overview citations like dedicated tools?

Ahrefs lists AI Overviews and AI Mode among the platforms Brand Radar covers, and defines citations as a domain counted when at least one of its pages is cited in a response. Its large prompt database refreshes AI Overviews every few days, with AI Overviews data available from August 2024 (Ahrefs help centre). For reference, Vercatus reads Google AI Overviews as one of its ten engines, from Google’s live results page, and keeps its named and cited figures apart from the other engines.

Should I cancel my AI visibility tool now that Ahrefs has one?

Do not decide on a headline. Pick one topic that matters and one competitor that keeps being recommended, and ask each tool to show the answers, the reason the competitor is picked, the change it would make, and how it would tell whether the change worked. Record what each showed, what it could not show, and the date you checked. If you already use Ahrefs and a dedicated platform, run that comparison before you cancel either.

Choosing

The right choice depends on how much machine-access measurement and causal verification your team needs. If you want to see how Vercatus works on your own site, start with the site audit, the answer engines and the knowledge base; pricing and how it works state the plans and the loop.
