The Best Tool to Check If ChatGPT Cites Your Website
What a ChatGPT citation check must record, software that shows which of your pages ChatGPT cites, and the cheapest reliable way to check it yourself.

The best tool to check whether ChatGPT cites your website is one that asks ChatGPT your buyers’ questions with web search on, more than once each, and records the address of every source each answer cites, so you can see which of your pages it cites, for which questions and how often. Vercatus, which publishes this page, works that way, and so do other AI visibility trackers. For a one-off check, ChatGPT itself and a spreadsheet are enough, as long as you record the date, the exact question and every cited link.
This guide describes what to look for in any tool and what Vercatus does. It is not a benchmark of other products.
What a ChatGPT citation check has to record
- The question, word for word, with the date. A citation belongs to one question on one day. A check that cannot show the question behind a number cannot be repeated.
- Whether web search was on. Without search, ChatGPT answers from what it learned in training and cites no sources. A check made with search off says nothing about citations.
- Every cited address, not only your brand’s name. A mention and a citation are different things: a mention means the answer names your brand; a citation means it credits one of your pages as a source. Count them apart.
- More than one ask. The same question can return different sources on different asks, so one ask is a sample of one. A share read over repeated asks, with its range, is a number you can compare from month to month. The Answer Share method shows how Vercatus does it.
- Which ChatGPT you read. The app a person uses and the official interface with search on can answer differently. Record which one a result came from.
Software that shows which of your pages ChatGPT cites
Vercatus asks ChatGPT the questions on your topics every day, reading its app as a person sees it, and its official interface with web search on when the app cannot be read. Every answer’s cited pages are stored. Your site is the domain you verify, so any cited page on it counts as yours, and each competitor is tracked by its own domain the same way.
From that, Vercatus lists every page the engines read for your topics, with the engines involved and the number of answers citing each one, and exports it. Answer Share counts an answer for you when it names you or cites one of your pages; a question that already names your brand does not count, because the answer names you only because the question did.
Other trackers record ChatGPT’s sources too, with different questions, schedules and limits. The comparison of AI visibility tools lists what to ask each vendor before you buy.
When ChatGPT quotes your blog but never links it
Three different things look the same from the outside. Separate them before you change anything:
- It answers from memory. Ask the same question with search off and with search on. If your wording appears without search, ChatGPT is drawing on what it learned in training, and no link is possible. Vercatus asks both ways; the answers without search show what an engine remembers and never count toward Answer Share.
- It read your page and credited another. With search on, ChatGPT can retrieve your page and credit a different source. Vercatus keeps the pages an engine read apart from the pages it cited, so a page that is read and not credited shows up as such.
- Another page quoted you first. A third-party page that copies or summarises your post can be the one ChatGPT cites. Open the cited addresses and look for your passages.
Your server logs can add one fact: ChatGPT-User visits a page when a person’s question calls for it, and OAI-SearchBot crawls pages for ChatGPT’s search. A visit shows that a page was fetched, not that it was cited.
The cheapest reliable way to check
The cheapest check costs only time:
- Write down the questions your buyers ask before they know your name: your category, alternatives to a competitor, how to solve the problem you solve. Leave your brand name out of them.
- Ask each one in a new ChatGPT chat with search on. Record the date, the answer and every cited link in a spreadsheet.
- Ask the same questions again on other days. A page cited once may not be cited the next time.
- Look at visits referred by chatgpt.com in your analytics. They show the clicks an answer sent you, not the citations: many readers never click.
- Make sure ChatGPT’s fetchers can read your pages at all. The free check requests your home page as OAI-SearchBot and the other AI crawlers in about a minute.
It stays cheap while the list is short and one person reads every answer. Each question, repeat, engine and market you add costs more hours; that is the point where a tool earns its price.
Questions people ask
How can I find out whether ChatGPT is linking to my site in its answers?
Ask ChatGPT the questions your buyers ask, with web search on, and record every source each answer lists. Repeat the same questions on other days, because the sources change between asks. A tracker does the same on a schedule and keeps the history.
Is there software that shows which of my pages ChatGPT cites?
Yes. AI visibility trackers record the pages ChatGPT cites for the questions you track. Vercatus lists every page the engines read for your topics, with the engines involved and the number of answers citing each one, and keeps your pages apart from your competitors’.
Which platform tracks ChatGPT source links for a specific domain?
Any tracker that attributes cited addresses to domains. In Vercatus your site is the domain you verify, so every cited page on it counts as yours, and each competitor is tracked by its own domain.
We suspect ChatGPT quotes our blog but never links it. How do I verify that?
Ask the same question with web search off and on. Wording that appears without search comes from training, where no link is possible. With search on, open every cited address: another page may have quoted you, or ChatGPT may have read your page and credited a different one.
What is the cheapest reliable way to check ChatGPT citations for my website?
A spreadsheet: your buyers’ questions, asked in ChatGPT with search on, on several days, with the date and every cited link recorded. It costs only time, and the time grows with every question and repeat you add.
