Query fan out

Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build a response; AI Mode breaks a question into subtopics and Deep Search can issue hundreds of searches. ChatGPT search typically rewrites a prompt into one or more targeted queries and may send further, more specific queries after reviewing the first results. Coverage of a complex intent is therefore the union of coverage across its sub-queries, so a page that answers only the head question can be cited for one branch and outcompeted on the rest (inference). Self-ask research shows that answering explicit follow-up questions narrows the gap between answering the parts and the whole of a multi-hop question. Google warns that creating separate content for fan-out queries primarily to manipulate AI responses violates its scaled content abuse policy.
