Publisher content licensing markets
Answer engines have started paying publishers through marketplaces and revenue shares rather than one-off deals. Microsoft's Publisher Content Marketplace (pilot described on 3 February 2026) lets publishers set licensing and usage terms for AI grounding and be paid on delivered value; Microsoft says it was co-designed with US publishers, tested by grounding Copilot responses with licensed content, and is onboarding demand partners including Yahoo. Perplexity's Comet Plus subscription (August 2025) was announced with 80% of its revenue going to participating publishers. Participation is by agreement with selected publishers; none of these programs is documented as affecting whether a page is cited.

CGrade C: reputable industry data or observation. A grade describes the provenance of the sources above; it is not a probability that a change will work. The effect basis says how the size of the effect is known: measured by a study, taken from an industry report, only documented without a size, or not quantified.
